PrimaryPivot: Bridging Divides to Safeguard Democracy

With a focus on mobilizing voters across the political spectrum, PrimaryPivot is dedicated to engaging Independent, undeclared, and Democratic voters in competitive open or semi-open states, for the GOP nomination. The goal is to support an alternative candidate to Donald Trump—one who will uphold our nation’s foundational principles.

January 6, 2024: PrimaryPower joined forces with Open Democracy at the New Hampshire State House to celebrate democracy and commemorate the events of January 6, 2021.

In a time of political extremism and polarization, the imperative to protect American democracy requires innovative and unconventional approaches. That is why we founded PrimaryPivot, an organization committed to transcending party lines to protect American democracy.

Former President Trump has long represented the erosion of political norms in the United States. But based on his own words, a second Trump presidency would mean something worse: a stark departure from democratic norms, principles, and institutional balance that have long defined the United States. His authoritarian rhetoric and tendencies draw uncomfortable parallels to countries that have lost or are losing their democracies, including Hungary, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

“As voters and citizens, we have only two chances left to prevent a catastrophic second Trump presidency. Why throw away the first shot?”

PrimaryPivot recognizes the danger of Trump and MAGA extremism, and we issue a call to action for voters who prioritize the preservation of democratic principles over partisan allegiances. As voters and citizens, we have only two chances left to prevent a catastrophic second Trump presidency. Why throw away the first shot?

There is a narrow but increasing path to the GOP nomination for an alternative candidate to Donald Trump. While PrimaryPivot believes any of the Republican candidates would be dramatically better than Trump, it has become clear that Nikki Haley has emerged as the most likely alternative. Would Haley’s nomination further imperil the reelection of Joe Biden? Polling data suggests this is possible. Many left-leaning voters dislike Haley and fear she might be an effective conservative candidate. But we would ask Democrats and Biden supporters, despite policy differences, would you prefer a 100 percent chance of democracy or a 50 percent chance of an autocrat coming to power?

PrimaryPivot is currently on the ground in New Hampshire, meeting voters where they are. And we are partnering with like-minded citizens across the country who wish to contribute in other ways—we have sponsored three groups of women who are handwriting and mailing eight hundred postcards each from St. Louis, MO, Cincinnati, OH, and Boulder, CO to voters in New Hampshire.

A parallel nonprofit organization, PrimaryPower, is dedicated to increasing voter participation in primary elections to influence change. PrimaryPower gives voters the tools they need to register and participate in their state’s open or semi-open primary, and encourages them to be strategic about which party’s primary they vote in. This effort has attracted a decorated advisory board of former elected officials, diplomats, and political professionals from both sides of the aisle.

PrimaryPower is also active in New Hampshire, hosting a candidate forum, commemorating January 6, sponsoring transportation on voting day through collaboration with Rideshare2Vote, and sponsoring the College Convention hosted by New England College.

Regardless of political affiliation, we invite you to join our movement to safeguard democracy and lead America forward, together. You can go sign up at our website, post your own intentions to vote in the Republican primary on social media, make a donation, write postcards, host an event, or simply tell a few friends. The stakes for our democracy are too high to not get involved.
